Historical Uses
The nopal cactus is among the most documented plants regarding its utilization in practical and medicinal contexts of Aztec civilization due to its benefits and pharmaceutical potential. This plant, being among the important ones in Aztecs' culture, had the main application in the treatment of wounds and other treatment objectives. In order for the wound to be cured, the Aztec doctors would apply the peeled pads of prickly pear directly to the wound to reduce inflammation, to promote healing, and avoid infection-all intended to develop a form of traditional medicine. It was also believed to treat fevers and could be taken warm to soothe many types of illnesses (El-Mostafa et al., 2014; Salazar-Gómez & Alonso-Castro, 2022).
Beyond wound care, the nopal cactus was integrated into dietary and agricultural practices, contributing to nutrition and sustainability. Its fruit and pads were valuable food sources, while the plant’s spines were used as tools for piercing or sewing. The high levels of antioxidants, fiber, and vitamin C in nopal contributed to its longstanding use for health purposes, such as treating infections and supporting immune health (Carmona Rosales, 2021).
