nutritional properties

  • Nopal cactus is known to have a high dietary fiber composition, including both soluble and insoluble fibers.

  • One serving size of about a cup of raw nopales (86 g) contains approximately

    • 2.9 g of carbohydrates

    • 1.1 g of protein, and only 14 kcal.

  • The most interesting feature, however, is the high fiber composition at about 2 g of fiber per cup, in a ratio of soluble to insoluble fiber of 30:70. Insoluble fiber is known to prevent constipation and hemorrhoids, and maybe even lower the risk of colon cancer.

  • Soluble fiber can slow the digestion and absorption of nutrients, hence helping to regulate blood sugar levels and also contributing to weight management.

  • In addition, nopal cactus is a good source of calcium-approximately 80 mg in every 100 g (Kaur, 2012; Chiteva & Wairagu, 2013; Monteiro et al., 2023).
